This webinar will explore how planners can support the integration and delivery of transitional and supportive housing in communities across Canada.

Building on concepts introduced in CIP's course, Integrating Supportive and Transitional Housing into Complete Communities, the session will bring together practitioners to examine the roles of planners and other key participants in the development of supportive and transitional housing. Through a facilitated discussion, speakers will share lessons from practice, explore common barriers to housing delivery, and discuss strategies planners can use to help advance deeply affordable, dignified housing.

We will explore how planners can respond to challenges such as exclusionary zoning, financial barriers, and community opposition while supporting more equitable and inclusive communities. The discussion will also highlight considerations for equity-deserving groups and the importance of applying a social planning and equity lens to housing policy and development.

The webinar is intended to complement CIP’s course by connecting foundational concepts with practical experience and real-world examples. The webinar is open to both participants who have completed the course and those with an interest or professional familiarity with supportive and transitional housing. Attendees will have an opportunity to engage with speakers and continue the conversation through CIP's National Community of Practice on Housing.

During this webinar, participants will:

• Explore the roles and responsibilities of planners and other key professionals and participants involved in transitional and supportive housing development.
• Examine common planning, financial, and community barriers affecting the delivery of transitional and supportive housing.
• Consider how planners can apply social planning and equity lenses to support deeply affordable and dignified housing, including specific considerations for equity-deserving groups.
• Identify practical strategies for addressing barriers to transitional and supportive housing.
• Learn from practitioner experiences and real-world examples that can help inform planning approaches.

Heather is a trusted professional with 25 years of experience. Her unique dual training and experience in planning and engineering support her appreciation of varied viewpoints, working tactfully and effectively with multiple and diverse individuals and organizations to build consensus.

Dr. Marie Cecile Kotyk BHEcol, MCP, DDes

Dr. Marie Cecile Kotyk is an Assistant Professor and Design Justice Research Chair at the University of Calgary. A social planner, housing practitioner, and founder of the UDesign Justice Initiative, her work advances housing equity, community-led planning, and Design Justice.
